Paint Correction in Orland Park, IL

Paint correction is machine polishing that removes a controlled amount of clear coat to level out swirl marks, light scratches, oxidation and water spot etching. It is how a tired finish gets its depth back.

What Correction Actually Removes

Swirls are thousands of shallow scratches that scatter light in every direction, which is why paint looks hazy in sunlight. Polishing levels the clear coat around them so light reflects cleanly again.

How far we take that depends on the paint. We check what is there first, test a small area, and pick the least aggressive combination that gets the result, because clear coat is a finite resource.

Process

How Correction Is Done Properly

  1. Decontaminate

Wash, iron remove and clay so the surface is chemically and mechanically clean.

  2. Inspect under light

Defects are identified with inspection lighting, not guessed at in the shade.

  3. Test spot

The mildest pad and polish combination that clears the defect wins.

  4. Correct and refine

Panel by panel, then a finishing pass and a wipe down to confirm the result is real and not filled.

Worth knowing

What Correction Fixes and What It Does Not

Fixes: swirl marks

Circular hazing visible in direct sun, usually from automatic washes or poor drying.

Fixes: light scratches

Marks you cannot catch a fingernail in, which sit inside the clear coat.

Fixes: oxidation and water spot etching

Dull, chalky paint and hard water rings that have started to bite in.

Does not fix: through the clear

Anything you can catch a fingernail in has gone past what polishing can level. That is paint repair territory and we will tell you so.

Why Clear Coat Thickness Sets the Limit

Factory clear coat is thin, typically measured in tens of microns. Correction works by removing a controlled amount of it so the surface sits level with the bottom of the defect. There is a finite budget of clear coat on a car, and every aggressive polish spends part of it.

That is why we test a small area before committing. The goal is the mildest pad and compound combination that clears the defect, not the fastest one. A shop that leads with a heavy cut on every car is spending your clear coat to save its own time.

It is also why we do a proper panel wipe and inspect afterwards. Some compounds contain fillers that temporarily hide what they did not remove. Wipe the oils off and you see the real result rather than a result that reappears in three washes.

Paint Correction Questions

The correction itself is permanent, because the defects are removed rather than hidden. How long the finish stays that way depends on how the car is washed afterwards, which is why a coating and a safe wash routine matter.

Not always. If you can catch a fingernail in a scratch it has usually gone through the clear coat, and correction can only reduce how visible it is rather than remove it.

Polishing removes a small amount of clear coat, so it should be done deliberately rather than repeatedly. We use the least aggressive method that works and check paint before going further.

Yes, if the paint has defects. A coating locks in whatever is underneath it, so any swirls left in the paint will be sealed under the coating for years.

Correction starts at $40 and scales with vehicle size, paint condition and the number of stages required. We quote after seeing the paint.
